January 20 Windows and Me Part II
On to Windows Vista, which is what I currently use as my main computer Operating System these days. There is a few things I really like about Windows Vista. First it is very nice looking with Aero turned on and the themes are easier to use more then ever. The next best thing is When a program does not respond, it tries to restart it and if you close it tries and find a solution. I never quite expected this last part to ever be in a Windows OS, although I have had similar things in the Mac and Linux OS's. The last thing I like is the Windows Speech Recognition program. That is a great piece of work for something that is free and I usually have to buy on a Mac. Don't get me wrong I am not a zealot on Windows but it has improved quite a bit. Although there is some things about it that just drives me crazy. The first is the amount of memory it wants to use and I understand how and why it is using it. I still find it strange to be using all that memory at times, since it can slow down program startup. I also find that UAC panel is great for security but it pops up all the time. I don't want to turn it off, but wish it knew what programs were from Microsoft and didn't popup when they were installed or uninstalled. Currently working on my bachelor's degree at 42 and majoring in information systems and the what that has to do with Windows. Well for the most part I know the basics of a few program languages. The ones I know the basics of are PHP, Perl and Bash. I know quite a bit more about C and Html. In school though I got turned on to C# and I fell in love with the language. I couldn't believe how it meshed C with some of the Java concepts I tried to learn. I ended up ditching Java for C#. Also along the way I started playing around with Silverlight and soon Asp.Net. I also want to learn Windows forms and WPF< some where along the line.
More to come soon January 11 Windows and Me
I have had a fairly long but strange relationship with the Windows Operating System. I have used it on and off since Windows 3.1 and at the time had Dos 6 installed on it. I used that until I got tired of it and moved on to other Operating systems. At the time I moved over to Linux when Redhat came out on CD. Then I used that and it various distributions, including Mandrake (now Mandriva), Suse, Debian, and many others. For years I only used Windows in a Business settings and used either Linux, FreeBsd and OpenBsd with smatterings of Beos, and anything else other then Windows. In 2005 I bought my first Mac and it was a Powerbook and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I even liked the OS and how easy it was to use and I became a Mac zealot for a few years. So what changed for me, well in one word it would be college. At the ripe age of 40 I went back to school at Devry University and I came upon a few problems that made it hard to do school from my Mac Powerbook. So a few months ago I bought my first Windows computer in a few years and it came with Windows Vista Home Premium and I actually enjoy using it. Anyway that story is for another post.
